Pursuit Africa Student-managed investment fund is a fund run by Pursuit Africa with the aim of equiping learners with finance and accountancy background with practical finance skills. The learners are taken through rigorous process from theoretical stages to investment decision making process. At Pursuit, we have all tools needed to equip learners with the best hands-on experience in fund management and investment

Background of the fund

At over 75%, Kenya has one of the highest unemployment rates among the youth globally. We believe this is largely due to lack of essential and practical skills needed by the industry. Education in the country is largely theoretical. To solve this problem, Pursuit Africa set up the Pursuit Africa Student Investment Fund to offer practical skills and industry best practices in the Financial Services Sector. With 20,000+ students graduating each year, employers are increasingly looking for graduates with something above and beyond academic achievements

Purpose of the fund

The fund aims to bridge the skills gap between academia and industry in the in the Financial Services Sector in Kenya and Africa by providing industry tools and resources to students. The fund provides an opportunity for students to invest and manage One Million Kenya shillings in a Kenya and other Sub-Saharan Africa markets

Pursuit Africa Equity Research Challenge

The Equity Research Challenge is a Pursuit Africa sponsored competition held after every three months aimed at providing a valuable opportunity for young talents to showcase analytical skills at a holistic level. Students learn and apply skills such as financial modelling, stock valuation, how various macro and industry trends drive a company’s financial performance, and how to deliver an industry-quality report.

1st Runner Up: 10,000
2nd Runner Up: 5,000

Round I: Online Quiz
All participants take an online quiz administered online through https://pursuitafrica.com. The quiz consists of 20 questions which participants are expected to answer in 35 minutes. Results are immediately made available.

Round II: Equity Research Note
Shortlisted candidates are given 15 days to work on an equity research note on a NSE Listed company and submit a report with an investment recommendation. The submitted report should be 4-6 pages long with target price and investment recommendation supported by fundamental analysis in MS Excel. The reports are evaluated and feedback provided online with recommendations on how to improve the participants’ analytical skills.
All participants for this round are eligible for 35% discount on our SMIF courses

Round III: On-Stage Presentation
Results of final selected participants are announced within 10 days upon submission of their reports. The final three candidates are given an opportunity to present their research to a panel consisting of three industry practitioners. Participants are given 15 minutes to present followed by a 10 minutes Q&A session. Winners are chosen on basis of their Research Report and Presentation.

Having a background in either finance, accounting or economics is an added advantage
